When James Dean died so tragically in 1955, he had already created the image that is the basis of today's extraordinary potent legend. This image is vividly expressed through James Dean's own views of his life and ambitions, combined with a stunning collection of photographs of the brilliannt young actor working on and off the movie set.
On his ambitions as an actor: "I don't even want to be just the best. I want to grow so tall thet nobody can reach me..."
On his chances in Hollywood: "I'm not the bobby-sox type and I'm nog a romantic leading man. They'll never give me a real chance."
On success: "No one ever did anything for me. I don't owe anything to anyone."
On his reputation: "My purpose in life does nog include a hankering to charm society."
On driving fast cars: "Racing is the only time I feel whole."
On the future: "If I live to be a hundred, there won't be time to do everything I want."

James Byron Dean (8 februari 1931 - 30 september 1955) was een Amerikaanse acteur. Hij werd een van de meest invloedrijke figuren in Hollywood in de jaren '50, ondanks een carrière die slechts vijf jaar duurde. Zijn impact op de cinema en de populaire cultuur was diepgaand, ook al verscheen hij in slechts drie grote films. Rebel Without a Cause (1955), waarin hij een gedesillusioneerde en rebelse tiener speelde, East of Eden (1955), waarin zijn intense emotionele bereik werd getoond, en Giant (1956), een uitgestrekt drama dat een jaar na zijn dood werd uitgebracht. Deze films worden bewaard in het National Film Registry van de Verenigde Staten vanwege hun "culturele, historische of esthetische betekenis". Zijn leven werd op 24-jarige leeftijd in 1955 afgebroken door een auto-ongeluk, waardoor hij een blijvend symbool van rebellie, jeugdige trots en de rusteloze geest is geworden.
